SANTIAGO APOALA WATERFALL

Santiago Apoala (“Where the water is distributed” in Mixtec) owes its name to the abundance of water in its territory. Apoala offers visitors unparalleled natural beauty: rocks, canyons, waterfalls and valleys, caves with wide galleries and natural viewpoints.

Due to the unique orography of the Mixtec region, mountain biking is a real adventure, traveling along roads and trails in the middle of beautiful valleys. During the tours there are several attractions, such as canyons, or the so-called “ghost forests” of oak and hay, in addition to the diverse flora and fauna, and a unique set of pre-Hispanic terraces on the slopes of one of the hills of the town. The visitor can appreciate the beautiful spectacle that the water of the river, of intense emerald tones, offers to the sight while it runs between stones, as well as to know the several “eyes of water” that nourishes the riverbed, that spills at the end in the Papaloapan river.
