The Prehistoric Caves of Mitla is an archaeological site in the Tlacolula Valley, where artifacts and cave paintings dating back 12,000 years have been found. This hike visits 5 of the more than 115 caves and stone shelters scattered throughout the valley, 3 of which feature cave paintings. The tour includes crossing under the road to see the Devil’s Cave, currently used for mystical pagan rites, and usually containing the remains of dark offerings.

Enjoy this 2.6-km round-trip hike near San Pablo Villa de Mitla, Oaxaca. Generally considered a moderate-difficulty route, it takes an average of 1 h 5 min to complete. This route is excellent for hiking, and it is unlikely to encounter other people while hiking it.

We will continue to Mitla, known as the “city of the dead” we will get to know its history-culture of an impressive and ancient ceremonial center of the Zapotec civilization. Admire the elaborate mosaics of fretwork and geometric figures that decorate the walls of the palaces and temples.
